Hay algunos libros que me atraen con tan solo leer el título. Éste es uno de ellos. Y llegar a la parte de la lectura en la que el título cobra sentido es uno de los más grandes placeres que experimento al leer, en el caso de éste fue algo que no me esperaba, que encajó tan bien y tan sutilmente.
En esta historia, el autor tuvo a bien de hacer una pequeña introducción en la que explicó el origen de este libro, que tuvo lugar durante sus primeros años de periodista, en la que le enviaron a investigar a un antiguo convento donde estaban vaciando criptas funerarias, no muy convencidos de encontrar alguna noticia atractiva. El descubrimiento más impactante fue cuando brotó una larga y abundante cabellera de un color cobrizo y muy vivo, que medía 22 metros con 11 centímetros y pertenecían a una niña llamada Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles. A los presentes les pareció trivial pero un acontecimiento como este no pasaría desapercibido por el observador García Márquez, que recordó una leyenda que le contaba su abuela cuando era niño acerca de una marquesita de 12 años con un cabello tan largo que le arrastraba y que murió de rabia por la mordida de un perro, venerada por pueblos del Caribe, pues la consideraban milagrosa. Así que la idea de que esa tumba pudiera ser la suya fue su noticia de ese día y la idea muy atinada por parte de nuestro autor de escribir un libro basado en una historia tan singular, ¿verdad?
Claro, la protagonista de nuestra novela es la marquesita de 12 años, María Sierva de Todos los Ángeles, hija de un marqués criada por los esclavos, desconectada completamente de sus padres en todos los sentidos, personas indiferentes que no tienen reparos en aceptar que no quieren a su hija y aceptan de buen modo que María Sierva no los quiera a ellos.
María Sierva es mordida por un perro que se sospecha tiempo después que tenía rabia. Si consideras el tiempo en el que ella vivió (durante el siglo XVIII) ya te puedes imaginar el infierno que experimentó al tener esa enfermedad de la que se tenía tan poca información confiable pero sí muchas, muchas creencias de que la rabia guardaba relación con la brujería, las maldiciones, castigos de Dios que enviaba demonios a las personas para que tuvieran una muerte lenta y sin dignidad. Estas ideas, por supuesto, hacían a las familias de los infectados merecedoras de la vergüenza y la humillación de la sociedad.
El papá de Sierva María no sabe cómo manejar la situación y busca soluciones con cuanto brujo o chamán se le atraviesa que no hacen más que empeorar la salud de Sierva María, acude incluso a la iglesia en la que no cree para suplicar ayuda y orientación a los padres del lugar. Uno de ellos, Cayetano, un bibliotecario muy culto será nombrado responsable del seguimiento del caso de la niña. Sin embargo, en cuanto haga su entrada en la vida de Sierva María, la historia de la niña, de Cayetano, y de la región cambiará para siempre…
Me gustó mucho como el autor arroja luz sobre un tema que ya se ha tocado en innumerables libros y por muchos otros autores: la superstición religiosa y cómo el fanatismo, los mitos, y las creencias absurdas llevaban a quienes más necesitaban ayuda al caos y la decadencia, obteniendo la crueldad de parte de quienes debían ofrecer su ayuda.
Aunque confieso que Gabriel García Márquez no es de mis escritores favoritos, para mí es un placer tan grande leer e intentar comprender cómo es que puede entretejer, jugar y dar sentido al lenguaje de ese modo, que nunca he visto tal habilidad en ningún otro escritor, me hace mantener las cejas elevadas durante todo el tiempo que tengo mi mirada sobre sus letras. Tiene un mundo literario propio, definido, inconfundible, único.
Considero que éste título es una buena opción para empezar a conocerlo porque solo tiene 200 páginas. Una lectura breve y de elevada calidad literaria.
