Este divertido libro te narra la historia de George, un niño pelirrojo que vive en una casa iluminada con velas porque sus padres son acérrimos ecologistas y están totalmente en contra de la tecnología y el progreso. Así que, por supuesto, no tienen carro, comen verduras cultivadas por ellos mismos, hacen manifestaciones para hacer conciencia del calentamiento global y no tienen ni siquiera una computadora o una televisión, lo que hace sentir a George diferente de los demás niños. Un día, George, al perseguir a su cerdito Freddy que se coló en la casa de al lado, (que desde que el tiene memoria había permanecido sola) conoce a Annie, una pequeña niña rubia con un vestido rosa de ballet lleno de brillos y lentejuelas, con una imaginación muy activa y a su papá, Eric, un joven brillante que siempre tiene los lentes chuecos y que parece que no se enoja con nada, alguien en quien George confía desde el primer momento, pero ni siquiera se imagina todo lo que va a vivir y aprender junto a este par.
Resulta, que Eric es un brillante científico que estudia el universo: los planetas, las estrellas, las galaxias, los satélites, los asteroides, agujeros negros… ¡Infinidad de cosas! Y lo mejor de todo, es que comparte sus conocimientos con él de una manera muy divertida, y le contagia esa pasión por la ciencia a George (¡Y al lector!), pero esto no lo hará solo, se apoyará en Cosmos, la computadora más potente, inteligente y soberbia del mundo. Y antes de que Eric le empiece a mostrar el universo y sus maravillas, le hace pronunciar a George el juramento del científico, en el que promete usar sus conocimientos solo para el bien de la humanidad y no para beneficio propio.
Porque Cosmos, es un secreto celosamente guardado por la comunidad científica y solo obedece órdenes de personas aprobadas, porque Cosmos tiene una tecnología tan avanzada que es capaz de hacer cosas que nadie imagina, crea un portal que te lleva directo al universo, a partir de un puntito de luz del que hace una puerta, y una vez que se ponen su traje espacial de astronauta pueden estar en cualquier parte del universo que le soliciten a Cosmos, ¡y todo esto pasa en la biblioteca de Eric!
Ese espacio mágico que solo ellos conocen, en el que George aprende que la Proxima Centauri es la estrella mas cercana a la tierra después del sol, que Júpiter tiene 63 lunas (¡y una de ellas tiene su propia atmósfera!), qué es una supernova, cómo se forman los agujeros negros, porqué Marte es rojo y muchas cosas más.
Pasan los días y George está maravillado con sus nuevos amigos y se distrae en clase, por lo que su profesor, el Dr. Ripe, lo expone ante la clase porque está haciendo dibujos del universo y le pregunta, ante todos, porque esta tan distraído y George comete el gran error de contar a todos de la existencia de Cosmos, y cuando quiso remediarlo ya era demasiado tarde, puesto que no sabía, que el Doctor Ripe era un científico que sabía de la existencia de Cosmos y lo había estado buscando por mucho tiempo, pero tenía ideas que lo beneficiarían a él pero no necesariamente a la humanidad, así que inicia sus planes para secuestrar a Cosmos y llevar a cabo sus malvados planes para desaparecer a Eric y aprovechar a Cosmos para sus propios intereses.
Así que George y Annie se verán envueltos en una batalla contrarreloj para salvar a Eric, evitar que el doctor Ripe consiga sus objetivos y además llegar a tiempo al concurso de ciencias en el que George quiere participar para ganar una computadora.
Esta historia es perfecta para empezar a sumergir a los niños en el tema del universo, para que aprendan lo apasionante que es y lo chiquitos que somos en comparación de todo lo que hay allá afuera, toca también temas como la importancia que tiene el cuidar nuestro planeta, el bullyng, la amistad y todo de una manera tan divertida que desde los más pequeños hasta los grandes lo disfrutarán muchísimo y se quedarán con ganas de aprender más del misterioso y fascinante universo en el que vivimos.
