Sinopsis del libro:
El librero es un hermano vocacional del cantinero y acaso también del farmacéutico. Más allá de las sutiles diferencias entre despachar licores, medicinas o libros, los tres acaban fungiendo como consejeros espirituales, vertederos de confesiones y testigos de las más extrañas conductas. A su manera, ejercen una suerte de pagano sacerdocio.
Literatos consagrados que llegan de incógnito a preguntan si se venden sus libros, ilusos neófitos que esperan ver su poemario autoeditado convertido de la noche a la mañana en bestseller; compulsivos ligadores otoñales y casanovas buscando amoríos entre lo anaqueles; doñas tafileras, maniacos crepusculares, sabihondos suicidas y los infaltables bibliocleptómanos desfilan por estas páginas.
Aquí está la mirada de Iván, que como pocos conoce los recovecos de esta abrupta selva de papel y tinta. Cada librería –como dice Carrión- condensa en mundo. Un mundo raro, como el de José Alfredo. Mundo bizarro, tragicómico y alucinante. Cual Virgilio posmoderno, Iván Farías nos lleva de la mano a recorrerlo. ¿Aceptan el desafío?

Ente este libro su autor, un librero llamado Iván Farías nos comparte sus crónicas (¿aventuras?) que vive en el piso de ventas en una librería grande y reconocida internacionalmente por su gran belleza en la que trabaja en CDMX.
Me pareció una lectura taaan placentera, entre otras razones, porque nunca había leído nada igual. Escribiendo a partir de su experiencia y lo que ha tenido oportunidad de observar en su trabajo habla de la escasa cultura de lectura que tienen los mexicanos ante los libros y la lectura, porque generalmente buscan adquirir un producto que consideran un lujo, y no placer. También es una de las razones por las que los libros de autoayuda son los que se venden más, ya que suelen buscar la lectura para obtener un beneficio (algo que se pueda aplicar para la vida o los negocios) y no por el placer de leer, una buena historia, por ejemplo.
Uno de los capítulos que me resultaron más interesantes y clave fue en el que aborda el tema de que México es el único país en el mundo en el que los libros se distribuyen forrados de plástico (lo cual, claro, representa toneladas y toneladas de basura innecesaria), punto que para los estadounidenses, canadienses, brasileños o a cualquier otro extranjero le resulta absurdo, porque antes de adquirir uno, buscan interactuar con él, enamorarse del libro. Sin embargo la pobre cultura del mexicano hacia los libros no permite la posibilidad de que los libros se distribuyan sin plástico, incluso realizó un experimento quitándoles el plástico a los libros y fue un absoluto desastre (como cabe esperar) los libros aparecían rotos, con hojas dobladas, manchasy demás indicios que demuestran (y comprueban la teoría) de que, en general, los mexicanos no saben cuidar y respetar los libros.
Me gustó mucho percibir calidez en la forma en la que comparte sus experiencias con sus clientes, la forma en la que expresa su amor a los libros y como, recibir a clientes que ya eran frecuentes es como recibir visitas en tu casa y poder disfrutar con ellos una buena charla en la que el centro de atención son, claro, los libros. Y, claro, como en todos los demás trabajos, también se ha atravesado con clientes que no son precisamente amigables, y al estar en una de las zonas más caras, el dice que en cualquier sitio donde el dinero y el conocimiento se reúnen, se darán cita también la estupidez y la prepotencia. También se ha atravesado a personas que han robado más de 20 kilos de papel en sus narices, a quienes él y sus compañeros llama “Los bolañitos”, pues Roberto Bolaño antes de tener éxito editorial era conocido por sustraer sin pagar libros (esto se conoce como bibliocleptomanía), y también cómo tiene que lidiar con escritores que pisaban a cada rato la librería esperando que sus libros hayan sido un éxito rotundo de ventas, como si esto fuera tan sencillo, y quienes quieren que casi casi pongas su libro en una vitrina en la entrada.
El autor también habla acerca del ciclo de vida de los libros, que no están de forma permanente en la librería, pues están en constante rotación y que ésta a su vez depende del éxito y la demanda de cada libro. ¡Es más complejo de lo que imaginas!

Y me encantó que cierra con un texto en el que habla de los libreros, las personas que se dedican a vender los libros. Cómo la gente se acerca a ellos no solo buscando un libro, sino también un consejo, ayuda, o simplemente un par de oídos que le hagan sentir escuchado por un momento. Y de lo importante que debe ser para un verdadero librero no solo amar la literatura, sino al objeto en sí, un gusto por gozar, observar, disfrutar el aroma del papel y sentir los libros.
