Sinopsis del libro

El instinto es una novela que se queda grabada. Una historia valiente de horror y redención que da pie a que cada lector se interrogue sobre cuestiones dolorosas, personales y, por ello, necesarias.

Quizá se preguntarán: ¿Por qué hay reseña el lunes? Porque hoy es el Book lovers day! Leer me hace sentir acompañada desde que aprendí a hacerlo, a los 4 años. Las primeras novelas de más de 400 páginas que leí las devoré cuando tenía 15 años. Fueron los thrillers de John Katzenbach. Y me abrieron un mundo de misterio que en ese momento no supe que marcaría mi camino lector para siempre, porque ya nunca los solté. Encendieron en mí esa chispa estimulante que reconozco, más de diez años después, cada vez que tomo un thriller intenso que despierta mis sentidos como pocas cosas más pueden hacerlo en la vida. Es por este motivo que, para celebrar este día a mi manera, te platicaré acerca de una novela negra que me robó el aliento más de una vez. Un libro digno de un book lovers day 🙂

Esta novela me tenía intrigada desde hace varios meses. Incluso la portada me parece sugerente, una ilustración que simula una de las láminas del test psicológico proyectivo Rorschach… detalles triviales que me hicieron sentir desde un principio que este libro era para mí.

Aunque ninguna de las pistas me preparó para el thriller tan potente que encontré…

Esta novela habla de la vida de tres generaciones de madres marcadas por el maltrato, el abandono, la humillación y la depresión. Aunque la historia principal es la de Blythe, la última de la generación de estas mujeres, que quiere poner toda su concentración y esfuerzo en romper el ciclo (o la maldición) por la que están marcadas las mujeres de su familia. Quiere convertirse en la esposa perfecta y madre de familia ejemplar. Porque su esposo viene de la familia impecable y ella desea estar a la altura y ser la madre que le hubiera gustado tener. Objetivo bastante ambicioso. Y más aún tomando en cuenta que ella no tiene ningún modelo a seguir que le oriente en el camino.

Todo se complica más aún porque, por supuesto, la maternidad no es para nada lo que ella imaginaba y se siente totalmente perdida (sensación que, creo yo, compartimos todas las madres en alguna etapa de la vida). Aunque ella siente que hay algo más… que es más complejo que la difícil adaptación que está teniendo en estos años.

Desde un principio no congenia con Violet, sienten una aversión mutual antinatural. Se atreve a reconocer que la niña la odia, que no siente ningún tipo de afecto por ella y que incluso es capaz de hacer cualquier cosa con tal de arruinarle la vida…

Una serie de eventos trágicos en los que Violet está involucrada mantiene a Blythe con los nervios de punta a lo largo del libro. Y por si esta carga emocional no fuera suficiente, nadie le cree, piensan que está loca y ponen en tela de juicio si realmente ama a su hija o si es una buena madre…

Blythe es un personaje frágil, con el que la autora nos lleva a los límites del dolor y la pérdida cuando estos se vuelven intolerables, orillándola a llevar a cabo conductas torcidas y completamente perturbadoras, te contagia la furia de la traición y la impotencia.

La pluma de la autora está llena de muchos elementos brillantes. Si tuviera que describirla en una sola palabra, sería: Valiente. Considero que hay que serlo para imaginar, escribir y publicar lo inconcebible. Además hacerlo de una manera muy cruda y perturbadora. Pinta la maternidad, que es un tema considerado sagrado, de una forma escalofriante y estremecedora.

Ashley pone, de forma sutil y mediante la ficción, un debate polémico sobre la mesa: ¿nacemos con la maldad? ¿podemos hacer algo para revertirla? ¿un niño puede ir más allá de los límites de lo imaginable en cuanto a maldad se refiere? ¿cómo vivir consciente de que tienes un hijo malo? ¿nacen o se hacen? ¿tú tienes la culpa de ello?

También expone el tema de la presión social que existe sobre las mamás: sobre el ser perfectas, el fingir que tienen todo bajo control todo el tiempo, el hacernos a un lado a nosotras mismas para ocuparnos de los demás, el tener prohibido quejarte, enojarte, llorar, gritar porque si lo llegas a hacer eres una histérica, aunque la responsabilidad emocional de criar a los hijos recae solamente sobre ti… En fin, te dejará pensando en tantas cosas que te dejarán en el limbo de las preguntas… igual que a Blythe.

Si eres thriller lover exigente y buscas algo nuevo, diferente e intenso, este será un total acierto para ti.

Aunque quisiera agregar que sugiero evitar este libro a mujeres embarazadas o cualquiera que tenga un recién nacido en casa (los demás, entran bajo su propia responsabilidad).
