Qué ganas tenía de leer al Nobel de Literatura Jose Saramago ♥ Curiosamente, el libro que siempre me habían recomendado había sido Ensayo sobre la ceguera, y nunca nadie me había hablado de éste en concreto, por alguna enigmática razón no es de los más populares del autor.
Éste título empezó a atraerme por su mismo nombre: “Las intermitencias de la muerte”… suena sugerente, ¿verdad? Leí la primera página y dije: sí, esto es para mí. El inicio me pareció ingenioso y me intrigó desde el primer momento.
Es un libro con el que no puedes evitar cuestionarte seriamente cómo sería la vida si el curso de la naturaleza fuera diferente, visualizando un escenario hipotético como el que presenta esta historia en la que, un día cualquiera, la muerte cansada de que siempre se estén quejando de ella, decide tomarse unas vacaciones por tiempo indefinido.
En éste país, al principio se sienten bendecidos porque solamente en su territorio la gente dejó de morir, aunque con el tiempo lo que parecía bueno empieza a percibirse como una maldición, porque el que la gente dejara de morir no significaba que la gente dejara de sufrir… ¿es justo una vida eterna cuando el cuerpo ya no puede más y pide descansar? ¿es realmente vida el estar moribundo permanentemente? ¿qué es el respeto por la vida?
La lectura hace entrar en debate sobre temas como la moral, lo que está bien y lo que está mal, la ética y observaciones interesante sobre los gobiernos y cuáles son sus criterios para tomar decisiones para dirigir a un país cuando se acercan tiempos turbios.
El estilo de escritura del autor me pareció brillante, nunca he leído nada parecido y mi cabeza sigue sin comprender cómo fue posible que hilara de manera tan magistral una historia que se observaba de manera tan global y amplia: En la mayor parte de la novela, no hay personajes concretos sobre los que gire la historia. Es más, los pocos que aparecen ni siquiera tienen nombre y sus apariciones tienden a ser más bien efímeras. La historia gira sobre la sociedad en general.
Yo intentaba darle sentido a esta complejidad de esta manera: cuando tienes personajes definidos sobre los que gire la historia (por mucho que lo que esté pasando afecte a toda una población o incluso sea un problema mundial) es como si tuvieras hilos cortos pero bien establecidos. En cambio, una historia en la que gira en torno a tooodo un país sin tener un referente concreto, siento que equivale a tener muchos hilos muy largos, y, por ende, más difíciles de manejar, sostener y dirigir para dar forma a toda una novela. Pero como Saramago se sabía un pro pudo hacer que algo tan complejo y en mi opinión, difícil de tomar forma, convertirlo en una obra de arte que hace que te explote la cabeza desde diferentes frentes porque todas sus observaciones sobre la gente, las posturas religiosas, la religión y los problemas sociales con una lente muuuuy aguda, puntual, afilada. Este escritor que se dio a conocer después de sus 60 años no se andaba con cosas.
Sentí que terminé leyendo una novela completamente diferente a la que empecé. Fue una experiencia… que todavía me cuesta encontrar las palabras para definirla.
En el mes de noviembre de este año, se cumplen 100 años del nacimiento de este escritor que no tenía reparos en recrear una sociedad imaginaria, imperfecta y a la vez tan real en el universo de sus historias. Él murió en 2010 y hoy me cuestiono ¿Piensan los autores que escribieron sobre la muerte en sus últimos momentos de lucidez antes de morir acerca de sus letras en que cuestionaban la muerte? ¿Piensan en sus historias, en las conclusiones a las que llegaron? ¿La suya la experimentó así como la imaginó, como la describió en sus letras? Así como Saramago, a veces me tomo la libertad de imaginarme lo valioso que sería poder rescatar esos últimos pensamientos.
