En la Barcelona de 1980 Óscar Drai sueña despierto, deslumbrado por los placeres modernistas cercanos al internado en el que estudia. En una de sus escapadas conoce a Marina, que comparte con óscar la aventura de adentrarse en un enigma doloroso del pasado de la ciudad, un desafío de siniestras consecuencias que alguien deberá pagar.

Empecé este libro con mucha curiosidad. Me han recomendado en varias ocasiones los libros de este autor que murió hace pocos meses, y estoy tentada a leer pronto la saga “El cementerio de los libros olvidados”, pero creo que es algo arriesgado conocer a un escritor con una saga. Por lo que comenzar con Marina me pareció lo más acertado.
A la novela le precede un breve y sugerente prólogo del autor que despide un atisbo de nostalgia, y con esa atmósfera de misterio, empiezas una novela que no te deja indiferente…
El libro empieza, paradójicamente, con el final de la historia. Está escrito en primera persona por Óscar Drai, un adolescente que vive en un internado en Barcelona del que se escapa por las tardes para recorrer las cansadas calles de la ciudad.
En uno de esos escapes, en una de las zonas más enigmáticas de la ciudad, conoce a una chica de apariencia frágil pero con una personalidad tan afilada con la que era inevitable que él se cortara más adelante.
Marina, la chica, invita a Óscar a pasar a su casa, un sitio lujoso y enorme, que hace contraste con la austeridad en la que viven, y conoce a su padre, un hombre de exquisitos modales y ojos amables. Óscar no tarda en darse cuenta de que entre padre e hija circulaba una corriente de afecto que iba más allá de palabras y gestos. Así, empieza a construir una estrecha relación con esta pequeña familia, detrás de la que se esconden más misterios y dolor del que Óscar puede imaginar. Aunque sin importar eso, es la familia que le acoge con tanta calidez a la que el adolescente quisiera pertenecer.
Marina le muestra los lugares secretos que ella conoce, como un cementerio de difícil acceso que ni siquiera aparece en los mapas, en el que ella asegura, que cada mes, puntualmente, acude una dama de negro que oculta su cuerpo y su identidad detrás de un velo, a dejar una sola rosa a una tumba sin nombre, únicamente grabada con el dibujo de una mariposa negra. ¿Quién es esa dama de negro que se va rápidamente del cementerio en un carruaje? ¿Por qué acude con esa exactitud al cementerio? ¿De quién son los restos que descansan en esta tumba sin nombre?
Así, los chicos empiezan a desentrañar estos misterios que los llevan hasta las profundidades de la misma historia de la ciudad, en la que estarán envueltos hasta un punto en el que será imposible dar marcha atrás…
El mismo Carlos Ruíz Zafón reconoce que “Marina” es su novela más difícil de catalogar, y coincido con él. Es juvenil, tiene drama, una dosis de fantasía, de ficción histórica y un final del que es difícil recuperarse. Creo que esos son los elementos que la hacen tan única, esa dificultad de definir, la confusión al pretender encasillarla. Sí, es que justo así es Marina, la chica que te quema con la mirada y con su determinación, la que aprendió que se puede vivir de esperanza y poco más.
