Claudia vive con sus padres en un apartamento invadido por plantas que se estiran para tocarla. Como todas las familias, la suya contiene una crisis, y sólo hará falta que algo o alguien llegue a detonarla.
Cada quien tiene un punto de quiebre en la infancia, y Claudia, la protagonista de esta historia, narra, desde la expectación y l mirada aguda de cuando fue una niño, los hechos que abrieron las grietas por donde se colaron los peores temores, aquellos que son irreversibles y empujan al borde del precipicio.
Los abismos es un relato estremecedor en el que una hija asume las revelaciones de su madre y los silencios de su padre para empezar a construir su propio mundo. Tras el éxito de “La perra”, Pilar Quintana consolida con esta el importante lugar que ha conquistado en las letras hispanoamericanas.

Recuerdo que cuando recién ganó esta novela el premio Alfaguara este año, era la sensación y todo el mundo lo quería leer. Me preguntaba si realmente era tan bueno como decían, y al saber de qué se trataba sentí que prometía ser una buena historia así que en cuanto cayó en mis manos empecé a leerlo.
Esta breve historia una niña llamada Claudia de 9 años cuenta cómo transcurre su vida en su casa, con tantas plantas que le llamaban la selva, que tiene un significado simbólico e importante a lo largo de la novela. Habla de la historia de sus padres, sus abuelos, y deja entrever de manera sutil la fuerte represión y frustración que viven las mujeres en su familia, pues dirigieron su vida de acuerdo a lo que les impusieron, lo que les “convenía”.
Como todo lo reprimido, guardado y no expresado es como una bomba que espera pacientemente su detonante para explotar y manifestarse, llega alguien que viene a romper la estable (aunque no muy feliz) dinámica familiar que Claudia conocía hasta entonces, y le cuesta entender lo que sucede, las conductas confusas de su madre y las traiciones que se da cuenta que suceden.
Sus padres hacen un intento por reintegrar nuevamente a su familia, pero como las emociones son algo complejo de controlar (sobre todo cuando no hay comunicación, orientación ni se saben reconocer) no resulta favorecedor para la familia. Por el contrario, Claudia se siente más confundida y abrumada, ve el abismo a través de los ojos de su mamá y, de una manera inocente pero peligrosa, intenta acercarse para verlo directamente… Quizá para comprenderlo, quizá para explicarse porqué su madre no puede salir de ahí, porque hay gente que muere en manos de él.
Mientras lees, puedes darte cuenta de que esta autora colombiana realmente se metió en la piel de una niña. Con su perspectiva, su manera de intentar resignificar y dar sentido a la depresión de una madre, dar sentido a la muerte. Intentar comprender ese abismo interno y desesperada por encontrar la manera de experimentarlo también. Perturbador. Ese talento me da la impresión de que requiere un trabajo interno muy intenso.
Me puso a pensar en lo difícil que debe ser que transcurra tu infancia con una mamá con depresión. Una mamá que está pero no está. Y además con un papá que está sumido en un silencio impenetrable y permanente… Me hizo reflexionar que quienes somos padres debemos tener especial cuidado en la manera en la que manifestamos y manejamos nuestras emociones y las situaciones desafiantes de la vida porque pueden tener repercusiones en nuestros hijos, que quizá no se perciben a simple vista pero que les afecta a niveles profundos que son incomprensibles para ellos, y que puede tener consecuencias incluso fatales para ellos, tanto a corto plazo como para su vida adulta. Siempre debemos buscar ayuda profesional cuando una situación nos supera, porque nosotros y nuestros hijos lo merecemos.
No te puedes perder esta novela corta, pero intensa y perturbadora que te hará cuestionarte tus propios abismos.
