Desde el año pasado sabía que éste sería el libro PERFECTO para este mes. Lo empecé con grandes expectativas y aun así hizo que me explotara la cabeza.
Quiero empezar compartiendo que nuestra Mary Wollstonecraft es la mamá de nada más y nada menos que de la poderosísima Mary Shelley, autora de Frankenstein. Aunque Mary mamá murió poco después de que Mary hija naciera, y esto marcó la vida de ésta para siempre :c pero ese chismecito literario lo dejaremos para otra ocasión.
Mary Wollstonecraft es una filósofa que sabe lo que quiere y no tiene reparo en decirlo, además de vivir en absoluta congruencia con su pensamiento a pesar de lo difícil que fue hacerlo en su tiempo (si en los tiempos actuales es complicado, imagínate hace más de 200 años), y es una mujer capaz de sorprender, intrigar e inspirar.
Nuestra filósofa no estaba conforme con la educación que las mujeres recibían y lo expresaba y plasmaba con su asertiva y poderosa pluma, en la que cuestionaba todas y cada una de las diferencias que se hacían en la educación de niños y niñas, que eran muy evidentes.
Mary considera que nuestra existencia debe ir más allá y tener un objetivo más noble que simplemente vivir para agradar a los hombres, y que, contrario a la creencia de aquel entonces, las mujeres somos tan capaces de trabajar, estudiar, tener nuestro propio dinero, poseer bienes y tener una opinión y criterios dignos de ser escuchados y tomados en cuenta.
Pero la autora no solamente se dedica a escribir y poner sobre la mesa todo aquello de lo que está en contra, sino que te explica porqué. Y registra todas las «explicaciones» que dan los hombres para justificar la degradación de la mujer en la sociedad, y ella toma todos esos argumentos absurdos y los hace pedazos en tu cara. En principio, me parece indignante que haya sido necesario eso, pero Mary refuta todas esas creencias con su debida y detallada explicación de lo absurdo de esas ideas.
Me pareció muy interesante cómo aborda la idea de que las mujeres tienen cuerpos más débiles que los hombres. Y si bien es cierto que, desde el momento del nacimiento, los hombres tienen mayor densidad de masa muscular que las mujeres, esta no es la única razón por la que ellos son más fuertes. Explica que, desde que son niñas, a las mujeres se les obliga a permanecer en casa ayudando en la limpieza y las labores del hogar, mientras a los niños se les permitía jugar libremente en el exterior, y ese hecho limitaba el desarrollo físico de las mujeres, y Wollstonecraft sostiene que «las mujeres tienen mentes débiles porque tienen cuerpos débiles», aunque esto no es responsabilidad de ella, sino de la sociedad que la oprime y la obliga desde pequeña a no fortalecer su cuerpo, para el correcto y óptimo desarrollo de su mente.
Me parece admirable cómo ella fue capaz de ver mucho más allá de su tiempo, cómo se atrevió a ver, señalar y publicar todas estas ideas tan brillantes que para nadie eran relevantes, que nadie quería ver, y cómo sostuvo estas creencias viviendo acorde con ellas, hasta las últimas consecuencias. Porque la sociedad la repudió, la aisló y tuvo muchas dificultades económicas/sociales/emocionales para salir adelante en la vida, pero nada la hizo recular. Sí, una mujer fuerte que no se andaba con cosas 💜 Pienso que es un libro que no podemos dejar de leer para entender la lucha que todavía existe para asegurar los derechos de la mujer.
