“Un día más” es una conmovedora historia en la que la vida de Chick Benetto está al borde del colapso. Desde la muerte de su madre todo está a la deriva: su matrimonio, su relación con su hija, su vida laboral, problemas incontrolables con el alcohol.

Así que, después de un insoportable suceso y con una pesada desesperanza a cuestas, Chick decide acabar con su vida… Así que regresa a la casa en la que creció, la casa en la que su padre los abandonó, la casa que su madre sostuvo sola. Pero al intentar llegar ahí, ocurre algo inesperado y Chick vuelve a ver a su mamá.

Le cuesta asimilar la situación pero, después de que su mamá le prepara un desayuno que le sabe a nostalgia y recuerdos, se deja llevar por la situación. Su mamá le lleva a hacer unas visitas en las que Chick, mediante otras personas, conoce cosas que hizo su mamá para sacarlos adelante y de las que él no tenía idea .

En este día entero en el que Chick tiene la oportunidad de compartir con su mamá, descubre todos los sacrificios que su mamá hizo por él y su hermana y de los que nunca les habló, lo que le ayuda a comprender mejor su vida, e incluso sentirse avergonzado por cómo la trató y por las veces en las que no la apoyó o la dejó en planos menos importantes.

Me parece una historia bonita para reflexionar sobre el incomparable amor que nuestras madres sienten por nosotros y que muchas veces no sabemos reconocer, apreciar y agradecer. Quizá si, al igual que Chick, conociéramos sus historias de vida podríamos entenderlas mejor y ser menos duros con ellas.

Con esta novela, vi una vez más, que muchas veces las palabras que más duelen son las que no se dicen, las que guardamos, las que duelen, las que son de amor, por lo que externar nuestros sentimientos de manera verbal es un poder, en mi opinión, subestimado y que deberíamos intentar practicar más seguido, porque la vida se siente diferente cuando lo hacemos.

Es el tercer libro que leo de Mitch Albom (también tenemos reseña en el blog de “Martes con mi viejo profesor” y “Las cinco personas que encontrarás en el cielo”) y en este sigue fiel a su estilo: bonito, entrañable, reflexivo, breve, entretenido y ameno. Pienso que son historias ideales para regalar.

Hay una frase de Erich Fromm que me gusta mucho y me hizo pensar en el mensaje de este libro: “El amor de la madre significa dicha, paz, no hace falta conseguirlo ni merecerlo”.

Quizá, al igual que Chick, después de terminar esta historia, veas a tu mamá de una manera diferente 🙂
