Protagonizada por una joven institutriz al cuidado de dos niños en una mansión victoriana, a lo largo de la narración intervienen presencias y personajes tal vez sobrenaturales. La anterior institutriz y el sirviente murieron en extrañas circunstancias. ¿Cuál es  el secreto que se oculta entre los muros la mansión?

Este crescendo de intriga, sostenido y desasosegante, se abre con el prefacio que el propio Henry James le dedicó en la edición estadounidense de sus obras, publicadas en veinticuatro volúmenes entre 1907 y 1909. Cierra la novela un epílogo a cargo de David Bromwich, que proporciona nuevas claves de lectura, y una cronología jamesiana.

De los especiales que hago en el blog a lo largo del año, creo que el que más me emociona es el de este mes, el de Halloween. Y aproveché para leer unos títulos que moría por leer desde hace tiempo, así que estoy segura de que también tú harás descubrimientos interesantes en esta temporada J ¿Cuáles consideras que son los mejores libros para leer en este mes?

Escuché unos comentarios de Stephen King respecto a “Otra vuelta de tuerca” que despertaron mi interés de inmediato: “Para mí, Otra vuelta de Tuerca de Henry James y La maldición de Hill House, de Shirley Jackson, son las dos mejores novelas de los sobrenatural escritas en los últimos cien años”. Y si, el libro de Shirley Jackson (del que también tenemos reseña en el blog, del especial de Halloween del año pasado) tiene un estilo parecido al libro de Henry James. Bueno, dime si esa opinión tan contundente de Stephen King no vuelve este libro irresistible y te despierta toda la curiosidad 🙂

Esta novela es una historia breve, pero intensa. Una joven institutriz que accede a asumir a un puesto un tanto misterioso: su trabajo consistirá en cuidar a dos pequeños huérfanos, Flora y Miles, con una consigna perturbadora: bajo ningún concepto puede comunicarse con el tutor legal de los niños, el tío, que no vive en la mansión, ella tiene que hacerse cargo de absolutamente todo lo que surja. Y por si no fuera suficientemente turbio tener una responsabilidad de ese tamaño, debe permanecer en la mansión solo con los niños y algunos sirvientes. El lugar es enorme, oscuro, aislado, y transmite una permanente inquietud…

Con el tiempo, ella empieza a ver a un par de personas que no deberían de estar vagando por ahí, y se entera de que dos personas murieron en circunstancias que siguen sin explicarse… Lo que despierta en la institutriz el ansioso deseo de proteger a los niños a toda costa, pero ¿realmente necesitan su protección?

Es un libro en el que es algo complejo discernir si nuestra protagonista realmente ve cosas o si deberíamos dudar de su salud mental… La historia te deja en suspenso, con muchas interrogantes, haciendo de este uno de los elementos que la vuelven más interesante.

El ambiente de la mansión, el misterio e intriga de las muertes y el insólito comportamiento de los niños construyen una atmósfera asfixiante, densa, que te mantiene en constante tensión. Casi casi puedes sentir sobre ti la penetrante mirada del fantasma que te escudriña sin que tú puedas observarlo a él, manteniéndote vulnerable (lo que te hace empatizar intensamente con la institutriz) y te deja la sensación de que hay algo por descubrir.

Me parece increíble la forma en que el autor logra que una narración con tan pocas explicaciones y acciones tan limitadas como pensadas se mantenga siempre un clímax de incertidumbre.

 

Me di cuenta de que el concepto, estilo y tema de Otra vuelta de tuerca ha inspirado a numerosas películas de miedo. Ya sabes: la casa embrujada, las apariciones, los muertos que regresan por un asunto pendiente… Esta historia se identifica como psicológica, principalmente por la revelación de los motivos y conductas de sus complejos personajes.

Todos los amantes de la novela negra, fantasmas y temas sobrenaturales no pueden dejar pasar este inquietante libro.
