En las montañas de la locura narra la expedición desastrosa que realizan un grupo de expertos a la Antártida, en el que descubren unos seres biológicamente extraordinarios que llegaron a la tierra desde otro astro mucho antes de la aparición de la humanidad, y que fueron casi extinguidos por una especie de robots de su propia creación. El estilo visionario, solemne y lúgubre de Lovecraft —sin duda, uno de los más legítimos herederos de Poe— confiere a la alucinante narración un singular esplendor poético.

Ya estamos a más de la mitad de nuestro especial de Halloween en el blog y por supuesto que un libro de H.P. Lovecraft.
Aunque reconozco que la ciencia ficción no es de mis géneros favoritos, siempre me gusta leer alguno que me saque de mi zona de confort y me haga disfrutar algo diferente y bien escrito.
Esta novela está ambientada en la Antártida durante los años de 1930, en la que un equipo de científicos está llevando a cabo una investigación que tiene por objetivo ampliar la variedad, la exactitud y los detalles de los datos disponibles de los orígenes de la vida en la tierra, pero nada les preparó para todos los males que les estaban esperando, oculta y pacientemente, en el que quizá no todos puedan salir vivos.
Para el protagonista es difícil procesar todo lo que está presenciando (sobre todo si tomamos en cuenta que es científico) , porque todo parece formar parte de una locura desintegrante, y es difícil que exista una imaginación capaz de concebir la imposibilidad de todo lo que el equipo está atravesando, pero el espíritu científico lo estimulaba a seguir adelante.
Nuestro protagonista hace un intento desesperado por detener las investigaciones que se quieren llevar a cabo en este sitio en el que habitan seres misteriosos, pues posiblemente se podrían desatar fuerzas y males imposibles de contener una vez que fuesen liberados.
Sin embargo la imprudencia y la ambición de quienes no vivieron esa perturbadora experiencia les quiere llevar a actuar con irresponsabilidad y continuar con las investigaciones, a pesar de las advertencias. Ojalá que no sea demasiado tarde para cuando quieran recapacitar (si es que lo hacen…)
Es un libro con mucha emoción, suspenso, aventura, descripciones nítidamente detalladas que te haces sentir que te encuentras ahí en el frío ártico, con el terror de ser devorado por monstruos
Me cuesta entender cómo Lovecraft consigue escribir sobre temas perturbadores y describir escenarios y seres lúgubres e inexistentes, aún así arreglárselas para escribirlos (y describirlos) tan poética y hermosamente. Esto lo disfruté bastante y esos párrafos los leía y releía una y otra vez ♥
Hace referencias a Edgar Allan Poe, en las que es palpable la admiración que sentía por sus letras. Y aunque seguramente nunca lo hubiera imaginado (porque Lovecraft murió casi en el anonimato) ahora millones de lectores de todo el mundo y todas las generaciones, sienten también admiración por las suyas.
