En este especial de Halloween quise incluir un título infantil/juvenil. Aunque reconozco que estos libros oscuros e inquietantes no es de lo que más buscan los niños o los chicos, si he coincidido con algunos que tienen inclinación a estos temas. Yo fui una de esas niñas que desde muy pequeña ya tenía despierto el interés por lo enigmático, por las emociones intensas que experimentas ante lo misterioso, lo inexplicable. Menos mal que existen libros para todos los gustos y para todas las edades 😀
Esta historia empieza algo confusa, porque proporciona muy poca información e intercalada en el texto hay varias páginas de ilustraciones que al principio no parecen guardar relación con la historia (que está escrita en forma de diario, por cierto).
El diario lo escribió una niña llamada Mary en los años 70 que vivía en el orfanato Thornhill. Esta pequeña tiene una condición que no le permite comunicarse con las personas llamada mutismo selectivo, lo que la convierte en blanco de bullying entre sus crueles compañeras. Principalmente una, que es particularmente encantadora con todos y despiadada con ella. A pesar de que no sabe como socializar, Mary quisiera tener amigas y sentirse parte de un grupo. Esta soledad que la invade todo el tiempo la compensa de alguna forma con un talento especial que le permite crear su mundo, la compañía que no encuentra en quienes están a su alrededor.
La inestable vida de Mary está por verse aún más afectada con la amenaza del cierre de Thornhill y sus estándares de cuidado cuestionables, hace que esté a punto de empeorar su infierno…
Las ilustraciones cuentan una historia transcurrida 30 años después, de una niña llamada Elle que se va a vivir con su papá a una casa ubicada enfrente de Thornhill, el orfanato que nunca volvió a abrir. De manera perturbadora, conoce la historia de Mary y de todo lo que vivió ahí. Empieza a ver cosas extrañas en los alrededores del lugar… ¿será posible que su vida pueda verse conectada con este siniestro lugar inhóspito desde hace tanto tiempo?
Conocer la historia de Mary conmueve a Elle, pues de alguna manera siente que la niña que escribió ese diario hace 30 años la entiende, pues también ella vive la soledad intensa y tristemente. Por lo que decide acercarse… ¿Qué es lo peor que puede pasar?
Me gusta cómo resalta los efectos de la soledad, el aislamiento y la falta de empatía, que tienen consecuencias profundas que lamentablemente se vuelven visibles en un punto en que son casi irreversibles. Ilustra de forma cruda la desesperación de que nadie te entienda, de que ni siquiera lo intenten.
Esta es la primera novela gráfica que leo y reconozco que colmó mis expectativas, es una experiencia de lectura distinta. El diario y las ilustraciones están entretejidas de forma perfecta, te deja una dosis de suspenso y te hace contener el aliento, como parece suceder todo el tiempo en Thornhill…
Aunque es una lectura algo intensa, la edad recomendada es para adolescentes y cualquier adulto a la que le gusten las historias de misterio que tengan ganas de algo distinto 😉
