Sinopsis del libro
Ikal tiene once años, es hijo de un obrero del ferrocarril y sueña con ser maestro. Admira a Chico, cuenta los trenes que pasan con tuerto, sueña con Valeria, una campesina, y vive mil aventuras con Quetzal, su perro. Todos son alumnos de don Ernesto, en la escuela vagón Malinali Teneplat, durante el curso que cambiará sus vidas. En la frontera de ninguna parte, entre campos de frutales y vagones viejos, treinta alumnos descubrirán la vida gracias a la pasión de un maestro que ha unido su suerte con la de estos jóvenes con las cartas marcadas. Una foto en blanco y negro de todos ellos, que duerme en un expediente olvidado de la Secretaría de Educación. Se convertirá años después en la peor pesadilla de Hugo Valenzuela, un brillante inspector. El maestro, anciano y casi ciego, debe jubilarse. Pide reemplazo, pero algunos políticos creen que ha llego el momento de dar carpetazo a un modelo educativo pasado de moda e inútil. ¿Inútil? Hugo no está tan convencido y decide estirar del hilo. En un viaje que le llevará a reencontrarse con su pasado, deberá jugarse su futuro, descubriendo que hay huellas que no se pueden borrar. Como las del primero amor o las de un maestro, que a través de la curiosidad y el cariño, nos abre las ventanas al mundo.

Esta semana es el día del maestro y quiero aprovechar la ocasión para compartir una historia que habla de uno con vocación profunda, que se renuncia a jubilarse a pesar de ser anciano y ciego para que los niños no se queden sin escuela, ve a sus alumnos como promesas y cree en ellos aunque parezca que traigan un destino poco prometedor escrito desde su nacimiento.
“El último vagón” es una hermosa novela narrada a dos tiempos. En uno de ellos, se narra la historia de Ikal, un niño de once años que estudia en una escuela vagón, creada para que los hijos de campesinos y trabajadores del ferrocarril tengan acceso a la educación mientras viajan y trabajan por el país. Don Ernesto, un hombre de sonrisa cálida y acogedora es el maestro de todos esos niños que no se limita a ejercer su papel de docente, sino que es una persona comprometida con los niños y su desarrollo, escucha con atención sus inquietudes, ofrece consejo y consuelo a quienes lo necesitan y ve en cada uno de ellos un futuro brillante, aunque las estadísticas digan lo contrario, él no pierde la esperanza. Y creo que es una de las más valiosas lecciones que procuraba transmitir a sus alumnos: la clave está en la manera de mirar, hay que verlo todo como una promesa.
Sin embargo, ese año escolar se ve afectado por acontecimientos que resultan en abrumadores cambios para los niños, entre ellos Ikal, que se ve obligado a abandonar la zona y la escuela, prometiéndose a sí mismo regresar al lugar que lo vio crecer con personas por las que se ha sentido amado y apoyado. ¿Logrará hacerlo?
El otro tiempo en el que transcurre la historia, es unos años después, cuando el expediente de la escuela y su futuro se encuentra en el escritorio de Hugo Valenzuela, un inspector comprometido con la educación a la que llegó la difícil tarea de tomar la decisión de cerrar la escuela vagón, porque ¿para qué preocuparse por la educación de niños que terminarán siendo campesinos, delincuentes, o algún otro futuro del que no vale la pena ocuparse? Y aunque parece ser una decisión fácil de tomar, pues a simple vista ese modelo educativo ya no parece rentable, el caso abruma a Hugo Valenzuela porque un puesto importante para él está en juego, un puesto para el que ha trabajado y se ha concentrado por mucho tiempo.
Es un libro inspirador, emotivo que te hace reflexionar y querrás que los maestros que más has querido lo lean. Resalta la importancia de las raíces, las huellas imborrables, el amor que debemos de tener hacia lo que nos dedicamos y tener siempre presente de dónde venimos para saber a dónde vamos.
Me encantó porque aunque es un libro breve, es entrañable, dulce y nostálgico, con dosis de dolor, pérdida e injusticia que tiene justo lo que necesita y está escrito de una manera tan bella que hasta las partes que parecieran más simples las saborearás y permanecerán en tu memoria. La descripción de los lugares es nítida y a veces hasta poética, las emociones las transmite de una forma vívida y un giro inesperado a mitad de la historia te dejará de piedra.
Los maestros son figuras tan fundamentales en la vida de nosotros (¿quién no tiene por lo menos un par de maestros guardados en el corazón?), que me extraña que no existan tantos libros que hablen sobre ellos. Éste me pareció un homenaje digno y precioso a aquellos docentes que dedican su vida a enseñar a los demás y a creer en ellos y en su futuro.
