Desde que su marido murió, en un accidente de tráfico, hace ya tres años, Lilian Girvan no ha conseguido levantar cabeza. Hasta ahora. Después de una crisis y algunos pensamientos suicidas, por fin empieza a manejarse bien como viuda y madre.
También su trabajo de ilustradora de libros tiene algunos alicientes… como las clases de horticultura a las que su jefa la apunta. Por lo visto, el encargo de ilustrar una serie de guías de horticultura para una edición de lujo implica también mancharse las manos de tierra.
Después de reclutar a sus dos hijas y a una hermana que la apoya contra viento y marea, Lilian se presenta en el jardín botánico de Los Angeles sintiéndose fuera de su elemento. Pero lo que no tardará en descubrir —con la ayuda de un profesor paciente y de un grupo de jardineros muy peculiares— es que, quieras o no, el sol siempre acaba saliendo en la vida de cada persona.

Este libro lo disfruté muchísimo porque tiene muchos de los componentes que yo busco en mis lecturas: tiene un fondo triste (casi todos los libros que leo lo son, de hecho), toca temas como la esperanza, ese toque de amor a veces inevitable sin ser demasiado empalagoso y la forma natural y real en la que escribe acerca del dolor, y, como plus, ¡esta súper divertido! Creo que nunca me había reído tanto al leer un libro.
En esta novela conocerás a Lilian, una ilustradora de 34 años, con dos hijas de 5 y 7, su esposo Dan murió 4 años atrás en un accidente ocurrido justo enfrente de su casa, y aunque al principio prácticamente colapsó y llegó al punto de que la internaran, ahora ya sobrelleva su vida de viuda de una mejor manera, siendo más funcional, aunque en el fondo resiente la ausencia de Dan pero hace todo por salir adelante con sus dos hijas, unas pequeñas que le hacen pasar cada vergüenza que es inevitable soltar una risa.
Aunque la profesión de Lilian suena un poco romántica, es realidad se la pasa gran parte del día encerrada en una oficina enfrente de una computadora. Esta pequeña empresa en la que trabaja se dedica a ilustrar los libros de texto para las escuelas, sin embargo está en su punto de quiebre, así que la jefa del departamento tiene una importante misión para Lilian: Ilustrar una importante enciclopedia de verduras que puede impulsar el futuro de la empresa, para lo que su jefa se tomó la libertad de inscribirla en un curso de horticultura, para que Lilian tuviera inspiración para ilustrar el libro y empaparse de información que puede serle útil para el proyecto.
A esta diferente pero posiblemente agradable tarea se suman las hijas de Lilian y su hermana menor, Rachel, quién ha sido su principal pilar en su difícil camino de duelo, quien no la ha dejado caer. La dinámica entre ellas me encanta porque siento que tienen su propio lenguaje, comparten las mismas heridas producidas por su madre y son muy sarcásticas. Rachel insiste mucho en que Lilian vuelva a hacer su vida y se permita conocer a alguien, pero ese tema Lilian lo ha dejado en segundo plano pues siente que todavía le afecta mucho la muerte de Dan y prefiere dedicarse solo a sus hijas, que claro, le absorben la mayor parte del tiempo y la atención.
En este taller no pueden estar inscritas más personas diferentes entre sí: una pareja de profesoras de avanzada edad, un chico que se parece solo poco más que un adolescente hippie que vive al día, un señor mayor bastante gruñón que en el fondo no lo es tanto y una joven mamá soltera que también lleva a su niño al taller.
Y, claro, el guapo y experto profesor, Edward, que sacudirá la vida de Lilian de una manera muy arrolladora y particular.
Aunque todos estos personajes son muy distintos entre sí, llegan a formar un vínculo estrecho y tocan la vida de los demás de una forma muy especial. Ese jardín, además de enseñarles cómo hay que sembrar, que es en la tierra donde se produce la magia y qué le hace bien a cada planta, representará en la vida de cada uno de ellos una especie de parteaguas, un antes y un después, aunque sin quitarle protagonismo a Lilian, que es con quién profundizaremos más a lo largo del libro.
Lilian se resiste a la inevitable atracción que siente hacia Edward, su profesor, por muchos factores, ya que siente que traiciona a Dan y a sus hijas, que perderá el control de su apacible vida emocional (que tanto trabajo le ha costado conseguir después de la muerte de su esposo) y por todo el dolor que la sigue atormentando.
Me gustó mucho que la autora trata el tema del duelo con mucho acierto y sensibilidad, dejando ver sus etapas desgarradoras y esas que siguen pero que pensamos que nunca llegarán: aprender a vivir con el dolor, recordar con agradecimiento y darnos la oportunidad de continuar con nuestra vida de una forma distinta.
También me encantó su forma de escribir que me llevó directamente al huerto, a sentir y oler la tierra húmeda entre mis dedos, ver los colores vivos de las hortalizas e imaginar ese sabor distinto de una verdura recién cortada y sembrada por ti. No lo podrás dejar de leer ♥
