Sinopsis del libro:
Sergio Sepúlveda, quien a lo largo de su carrera profesional ha revelado los casos más inverosímiles olvidados por la historia y los ha llevado a la pantalla nacional, abre los expedientes de los 15 homicidas más terribles de todos los tiempos, hombres que saltaron a la fama por su sadismo y sangre fría, y que tocan esa parte oscura de la naturaleza humana tan difícil de creer.
Cuando Ted Bundy no trabajaba en el Centro de Crisis de Suicidios, extendía su aterrador historial con hasta cinco crímenes de mujeres por día. “Creo que ni él supo a cuantas personas asesinó”, admitió su confesor.
Gregorio Cárdenas, alumno de excelencia y siempre aclamado por su alto coeficiente, hizo de su patio un cementerio con sus víctimas. El también llamado Estrangulador de Tacuba consiguió el perdón del entonces presidente Luis Echeverría y fue ovacionado en la Cámara de Diputados.
Nadie imaginó que el reservado Ed Gein convertiría su casa en su museo del horror: lámparas hechas con rostros, un collar de labios, recipientes con bases de cráneos, entre otras decoraciones. En silencio creció el Carnicero de Planfield…

Alguna vez leí que todos tenemos un amigo obsesionado con los asesinos seriales, y que si no lo tienes, ese amigo eres tú. En mi caso así es. No conozco a nadie que tenga esa curiosidad por estos individuos como yo, que no me pierdo ningún documental ni película que trate sobre alguno de ellos, así que en cuanto vi “Monstruos de la vida real” supe que lo devoraría.
Para empezar el título me pareció muy atinado, ya que las razones que llevan a estos asesinos a acabar con la vida de las personas, casi siempre de manera despiadada y torturante, desafían la comprensión de la mayoría de nosotros y se vuelven monstruos aberrantes ante nuestros ojos.
El diseño del libro es muy atractivo y se nota que el autor se documentó muy bien para redactarlo y darle estructura. En todos los casos empieza hablando del contexto del nacimiento de cada uno de los asesinos (exceptuando a los que cuya identidad se desconoce hasta la fecha, como Jack El Destripador, claro está), de algunos habla incluso cómo se conocieron sus papás. Describe sus infancias y aunque en muchas hay coincidencias que evidentemente fueron determinantes o por los menos muy influyentes en su vida y su futuro (como el abuso, abandono, soledad, rechazo, maltrato, que son de hecho la mayoría) también hay otros que tuvieron infancias ordinarias y aparentemente sanas.
También habla acerca de algunos asesinos que han tomado de referencia para hacer algunas películas, como Ed Gein, el sujeto en el que se inspiraron para hacer la icónica película Psycho o el asesino que se disfrazaba de payaso y mataba a los niños en el que Stephen King se inspiró para escribir “It”.
Tiene algunas secciones intercaladas en las que comparte curiosidades y conceptos clave explicados detalladamente para comprender mejor la lectura, lo que me pareció un acierto (y muy fiel al estilo del autor).
Los casos son estremecedores y la mayoría apenas concebibles para la imaginación, en el que el escritor describe con detalle desde cómo operaban y escogían a sus víctimas, cómo y dónde dejaban los cuerpos (de los que se tiene conocimiento, claro, porque en muchos casos no se encontraban algunos o no se comprobaron) hasta los juicios, condenas y en algunos casos las muertes de estos asesinos. Algunos confesaron, a otros nunca se les arrancó la verdad por más que intentaron, por otro lado unos se arrepintieron y otros hasta se mostraban orgullosos de sus crueles acciones.

Es un libro que te estimula a cuestionarte ciertas interrogantes que numerosos psicólogos y especialistas en el campo se han esforzado en estudiar pero sin responder con éxito, pues hay demasiadas variables que entran en juego, como por ejemplo: ¿Un asesino nace o se hace? ¿Realmente pueden rehabilitarse?
