Escrita con una prosa dotada de deslumbrantes poderes sensoriales, “Los recuerdos del porvenir” marcó el luminosos arranque en la trayectoria de Elena Garro. El pueblo de Ixtepec es quien cuenta en estas páginas una sucesión de episodios en los que se mezclan la crueldad y la fe, la pasión y el odio, la mentira y la perfidia, con la mirada propia de los grandes relatos fantásticos, a través de un amplio reparto de personajes de las distintas capas sociales, desde las prostitutas y los campesinos hasta las antiguas familias y los religiosos.

Ixtepec se ubica en la tierra caliente del corazón de México, en un sitio que es todos y es ninguno, pues se trata del pueblo imaginario en que Elena Garro ambientó su representación de los convulsos años posrevolucionarios de un México en el que la injusticia del despojo de tierras, el racismo y la violencia contra las mujeres eran, como lo son hoy, un asunto de todos los días.

Fábula poderosa de las heridas históricas de un país y una época, Los recuerdos del porvenir está llamada a ocupar, finalmente, su sitio como un clásico indiscutible de la literatura hispanoamericana.

Al decidir empezar a leer “Los recuerdos del porvenir” lo hice tímidamente. Es el primer libro que he leído de la autora y he escuchado tantas opiniones respecto a sus libros, a su persona, que me parecía un personaje mítico y misterioso… Elena Garro es la considerada la segunda escritora más importante de México (solo después de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz) y quise descubrir ya, por mi misma, cual es la razón.

Necesito empezar diciendo que tiene uno de los mejores inicios de novela que he leído en TODA MI VIDA: magistral, imponente, profundo.  Recuerdo que me detuve y me quedé paralizada. Quizá parece que exagero, pero es verdad, cuando lo leas sabrás de lo que hablo. Nunca antes había experimentado algo similar con un libro, y, con ese comienzo sin igual, sabía que estaba por embarcarme en una novela escrita impecablemente.

La historia está ambientada en Ixtepec, un pueblo que supuestamente es ficticio pero sí existe (me di a la tarea de investigar y es un pequeña población ubicada en Oaxaca) en el que se siguen viviendo las consecuencias del reciente término de la revolución, estando muy lejos de vivir el anhelado sosiego.

El narrador es muy interesante y particular: Ixtepec. Sí, quién te cuenta su historia es el mismo pueblo, que te lleva por sus calles y te describe a su gente. Este pueblo tiene un talento muy particular para llevarte a sí mismo, sentir su calor, percibir sus aromas y sus colores vibrantes. También se mete en tu piel para hacerte sentir el miedo de su gente, su dolor y su impotencia.

La historia tiene una pizca sutil de fantasía, tan sutil que es fácil confundirla con la realidad. Por esta razón Elena Garro es considerada precursora del realismo mágico.

Me gusta lo que dice y cómo lo dice. Me encanta la fuerza e importancia que le da a cada uno de los personajes (incluso a los secundarios), se nota que pulió cada detalle de ellos, con una personalidad muy definida. Quisiera resaltar a los personajes femeninos, son increíbles, sobretodo Julia. Ella es todo lo que no se espera de una mujer en aquella época. Representa el empoderamiento femenino y la determinación de conseguir el futuro que persiguen.

La prosa de esta novela es magnífica y poética. Sus descripciones son detalladas y de gran belleza. Debo reconocer que este género de novela ficticia histórica mexicana no es de los que tienden a atraerme, pero Elena hizo un trabajo maravilloso e inolvidable con este libro. Es nostálgico, dramático, mágico y muy emotivo.

Es un libro con una fuerte crítica política, social, religiosa y de género en el que queda plasmada la vergonzosa realidad del país, y este pueblo, como bien lo describe la sinopsis, es ninguno y a la vez todos, resaltando la cruel indiferencia ante la tragedia de los más desfavorecidos.

 

Al terminar de leer esta historia, me pregunté porque el nombre de Elena Garro no está en lo más alto de la literatura. Creo que no tuvo (ni tiene) el reconocimiento que merece por el machismo que insiste en reprimir y ahogar las voces de las grandes escritoras, ese machismo del que habla con tanta brutalidad en este libro.

Me parece triste que sea más conocida por ser la esposa de Octavio Paz, el único escritor mexicano que ha ganado un premio Nobel de Literatura (hay quienes dicen que ella escribe mejor que él) que por sus libros. Al leer “Los recuerdos del porvenir” me daba cuenta de que tiene toda la calidad del mundo para haber sido merecedor del premio más importante de su categoría.

Hoy solo nos queda leerla, disfrutarla, no olvidarla y darle el lugar en la literatura que se merece. Hay tanto que decir sobre ella, sobre su libro, que no terminaría. Léela y deja que sus líneas cautiven tus sentidos.
