Sinopsis del libro
Sobre el fango negro de Auschwitz que todo lo engulle, Fredy Hirsch ha levantado en secreto una escuela. En un lugar donde los libros están prohibidos, la joven Dita esconde bajo su vestido los frágiles volúmenes de la biblioteca pública más pequeña, recóndita y clandestina que haya existido nunca.
En medio del horror, Dita nos da una maravillosa lección de coraje: no se rinde y nunca pierde las ganas de vivir ni de leer porque, incluso en ese terrible campo de exterminio, “empezar un libro es como subirse a un tren que te lleva de vacaciones”.

Hoy es el Día Internacional de conmemoración en memoria de las víctimas del Holocausto. A mí me parece importante no olvidar, seguir recordando y divulgando este tiempo tan atroz y despiadado de la historia, para que no se repita, para que al leer y pronunciar en voz alta los nombres de las personas que estuvieron ahí, quede constancia de que el mundo no les ha olvidado.
Es difícil que yo pueda resistirme a una novela ambientada en el holocausto, y al conocer la existencia de uno con una biblioteca prohibida, defendida a capa y espada por una pequeña bibliotecaria tan lastimada como obstinada y valiente, supe que necesitaba conocerla y devorarla.
La bibliotecaria de Auschwitz, se trata de la vida de Dita Adlerova y su tormentosa experiencia en el campo de concentración más grande que ha visto el mundo.
En el bloque 31 de Auschwitz, Fredy Hirsch, un alemán judío comprometido como pocos con la educación y el bienestar de los niños, levanta una pequeña escuela. Los alemanes tienen conocimiento de ello y han dado su consentimiento para ese espacio. Lo que no saben, es que escondidos con recelo, hay una modesta pero poderosa biblioteca con 8 maltratados libros, y Dita tiene la titánica misión de cuidarlos a capa y espada, de prestarlos durante las clases, con el peligro de ser atrapada por tener consigo las armas más peligrosas y poderosas del mundo, razón por la que los alemanes los tienen prohibidos. Lo más terrible de ser capturada ni siquiera sería morir, sino ser parte de los experimentos del tirano doctor Mengele: el doctor muerte, una de las personas más temidas que abría por la mitad a los prisioneros vivos para conocer los misterios del funcionamiento del cuerpo humano.
Todos conocen y respetan a Hirsch, en un lugar en el que es difícil confiar en nadie. Pero Hirsch guarda un secreto, uno que considera terrible y que si se diera a conocer la admiración que sienten por él se convertiría de inmediato en repugnancia y aversión, por lo que no se siente merecedor del cariño y confianza de la gente… ¿De verdad es tan indigno ese secreto tan bien guardado?
Todos los días en este lugar de pesadilla es luchar por sobrevivir. No hay futuro, solo existe el ahora. El hambre del ahora. La muerte del ahora. La desesperación del ahora. Pero Hirsch siempre intenta inyectar de fuerza y resiliencia a sus estudiantes, a las personas que se cruzan por su camino, lo que ejerce una importante influencia en la vida de Dita, que mientras más amenazante se vuelve todo, más fuerza se obliga a tener, porque como ella dice: “Quienes creen que las flores crecen en los jarrones no saben nada de literatura”.
Dita se refugia en los libros para salir por unos minutos del infierno en el que vive por lo que los valora y los mima como tesoros. Ella y yo compartimos el mismo pensamiento: “Cuida a los libros y los libros cuidarán de ti”.
Dita coincidió en tiempo, espacio y bloque con una persona cuyo nombre conoce todo el mundo, pero que no consiguió sobrevivir. Espero no haber dado un spoiler, pero de verdad tenía comezón por compartir esto.
Disfruto mucho los libros que conectan con mis emociones intensamente, pero no había leído nada con el nivel de éste título. Nunca había llorado tanto con la lectura, sentía que sus despedidas eran mis despedidas y cada pocas páginas se me llenaban los ojos de lágrimas y sentía como me escocía el pecho y me quemaba por dentro. Una historia poderosa escrita de manera magistral, ojalá pudiera escribir y expresar de manera más exacta todo lo que me hizo pensar, sentir y conectar. Es toda una experiencia que sacude tus entrañas y que por nada te deberías perder.
La historia y el futuro de Dita son impresionantes. Al final viene un apartado en el que el autor explica cómo se gestó el libro y su experiencia al tener contacto con Dita. Su pluma estuvo a la altura de una historia tan apasionante e intensa como esta ♥
Hoy quiero recordar al profesor Morgenstern y a Fredy Hirsch, que en medio del hambre, la muerte y el dolor buscaron con toda desesperación y sus escasos medios despertar una sonrisa y el amor por el conocimiento a los niños en el lugar más terrible del mundo durante el tiempo más oscuro. ¿A quién quieres recordar tú hoy?
