Primero que nada, necesito recalcar la importancia de no subestimar este libro por las escasas 136 páginas que tiene, porque son 136 páginas llenas de sensibilidad, metáforas y de temas profundos y delicados que, aún así, es apta para lectores a partir de 9 años, esto gracias a lo cuidadosa que fue la autora para escribirla y adaptarlo para los más jóvenes.
Este libro nos ofrece una historia corta y que parece sencilla, en la que conoceremos dos vidas complicadas, las de Rob Y Sixtina, nuestros protagonistas, que se entretejen casi sin querer, unidas por el dolor, la pérdida y la rabia que cada uno alberga en su interior.
Rob es un niño de sexto grado que vive en un motel junto con su papá, y una mañana caminando distraídamente en el bosque que está detrás del motel encuentra a un imponente y hermoso tigre enjaulado. La escena le parece tan impactante e inesperada que le roba la concentración todo el día, incluso cuando al tomar el bus escolar unos insoportables hermanos empiezan a molestarlo (como siempre) diciéndole retrasado, que nadie lo quiere y demás cosas hirientes. El bullying es un tema recurrente en el libro pero nunca lo menciona como tal.
Ese día le guardaba a Rob otra sorpresa: ingresaría a su grupo una niña llamada Sixtina Bailey, una niña ruda de pequeños ojos negros que irradia fuerza, coraje y mucha ira, que se mete en problemas fácilmente con los demás niños.
Uno de los temas centrales del libro es cómo Rob maneja el dolor de haber perdido a su mamá 6 meses atrás. Él tiene una “maleta” en su cabeza llena de las emociones, los sueños y los deseos que se esfuerza en reprimir, por lo que no se relaciona con otras personas y el vínculo con su papá (que de hecho, fue quien le obligó, de alguna forma, a reprimir lo que siente) no es el más cercana, por lo que la mayoría del tiempo se siente muy solo.
Los niños de la escuela tienen una aversión hacia Rob por unas manchas y llagas dolorosas que tiene en las piernas, los médicos desconocen las causas de su aparición, lo único que saben es que son incurables y no son contagiosas. Que, por cierto, salieron curiosamente solo poco después de la muerte de su mamá.
Rob tiene un talento especial para tallar madera y crear las figuras más hermosas y fielmente parecidas a las formas en las que él se inspira, y me pareció intangiblemente bonito cómo lo manejo la autora para retratar la forma en la que esta actividad lo conecta irremediablemente con su madre.
Y quizá sea precisamente por eso, por la facilidad con la que Sixtina expresa lo que siente, que Rob empieza a tener interés de conocerla, de acercarse a ella y tener deseos de ayudarla. También considera que es la persona perfecta para compartirle su último secreto: el avistamiento del tigre, lo cual tiene tantas formas distintas de terminar que lo llenan de incertidumbre, y al enterarse quién es el propietario de ese tigre y cómo llegó allí, surge la disyuntiva de sí debería dejarlo ahí o liberarlo, aunque Sixtina (como siempre) tiene muy claro que es lo que quiere hacer. Aunque el tigre, en realidad, es su forma de proyectar las emociones difíciles con las que están lidiando en sus vidas.
Un personaje memorable en esta historia es la mujer negra de casi dos metros llamada Willie May, la persona que se dedica a limpiar las habitaciones del hotel y con la que Rob disfruta estar porque le comparte de su sabiduría, Sixtina incluso dice que es una profetisa, quien les dice verdades difíciles de escuchar y cosas que ni se imaginaban, como la verdadera razón de la aparición de las manchas de Rob en las piernas… pero es lo que les puede ayudar a empezar su sanación, reconociendo el dolor que hay detrás de esa rabia, esa tristeza, ese aislamiento.
Una de las características que más disfruté de este pequeño libro, es cómo la escritora nos ilustra de forma muy inteligente, como el querer evitar vivir nuestro dolor puede desencadenar consecuencias catastróficas para nosotros mismos y los que nos rodean, y que además nos impide conectarnos y relacionarnos con quienes amamos.
Y es una lectura que pueden disfrutar desde lectores jóvenes hasta adultos que tengan ganas de un libro corto pero profundo con una buena carga de metáforas de que te dejarán con un buen sabor de boca.
