Me sorprende lo versátil que es John Boyne, un escritor capaz de escribir ficción sobre los temas más diversos y conseguir que ninguna de sus novelas se parezcan entre sí (me cuesta trabajo entender cómo lo consigue), pues tiene desde fantasía, novelas juveniles, de fantasmas y su más famoso libro “El niño con el pijama de rayas”, que seguramente lo conoces.
En esta novela de misterio y suspenso nos ambientaremos en una época victoriana, en 1867, a mí en lo particular me suele costar imaginar los escenarios de esos tiempos, pero el autor tiene gran habilidad para describir detalles esenciales que consiguen transportarte al lugar de una manera fluida y agradable, sin caer en las explicaciones innecesarias que pueden llegar a hacer la lectura larga y aburrida. Además de que inicia con un escenario que me pareció todo un acierto.
La historia está escrita en primera persona por nuestra protagonista, Eliza Caine, una chica de 21 años que acaba de perder a su padre, y su vida como la conocía hasta ahora se evapora, así que se ve en la necesidad de solicitar un enigmático puesto de institutriz anunciado en el periódico, en un lugar muy alejado de la ciudad que nunca ha visitado, pero en cuanto llega a su destino en la estación del tren siente cómo un par de manos la empuja decididamente hacia las vías del tren. Asustada y sin encontrar una explicación razonable ante lo que acaba de suceder se presenta en Gaudlin Hall, escoltada por un cochero un poco grosero y desagradable que no hace nada por contestar ninguna de sus preguntas. Eliza, pretendiendo ser lo más optimista posible hasta donde sus circunstancias se lo permiten, se encuentra ante una mansión bastante lúgubre, de aspecto descuidado y sombrío en la que los reciben un par de niños, Isabella y Eustace, unos niños que no se muestran abiertos y parecen estar solamente al cuidado de una señora de la cocina y el cochero, lo que despierta muchas inquietantes interrogantes en la institutriz: ¿Dónde están los papás de los niños? ¿Quién la contrató? ¿Por qué
Eliza intenta darse a la tarea de desentrañar los misterios que envuelven todo en aquel lugar: los niños, los escasos y desagradables empleados que buscan evadirla todo el tiempo, la misma casa y las verdades a medias son constantes a lo largo de toda la historia que te mantiene en un nivel de tensión e intriga constante.
A pesar de sus constantes investigaciones infructuosas, Eliza consigue dar con información tan relevante como perturbadora: todas sus antecesoras, excepto una, han muerto en extrañas circunstancias…
Tentada a marcharse del lugar temiendo por su vida por el peligro que la acecha en cada rincón y a cada momento, se resiste al pensar en los niños, ya que ella es su única responsable y no se siente capaz de abandonarlos a su suerte en un sitio tan amenazante y se dedica a arrancar las respuestas que tanto se le resisten.
Es una inquietante historia de fantasmas que vale la pena darle la oportunidad, que tiene varios mensajes sutiles pero importantes, como el encuentro entre las fuerzas del bien y el mal, y cómo los vínculos estrechos, como el de padre e hija, se mantienen y fortalecen a través de las barreras de la vida y la muerte.
