Todo comienza con un trabajo para la clase de Literatura: escribir una carta a una persona muerta.

Recuerdo que este libro era uno de los que más deseaba leer mientras estaba en la universidad, pero hasta hace poco pude leerlo y me agarró por sorpresa la intensidad de su contenido.
Es una novela juvenil (sugerida para mayores de 16 años) escrita en forma de misivas por Laurel (casi como un diario), cartas que empezaron como una tarea en la clase de literatura dirigida a una persona muerta y en la que nuestra protagonista encontró el medio perfecto para canalizar sus emociones y pensamientos, siendo así una herramienta para ponerlos en su lugar, desahogarse y comprenderse mejor a sí misma, a quienes le rodean y los últimos difíciles acontecimientos que le han dejado marcada.
Laurel está pasando por una etapa muy difícil: el reciente y misterioso fallecimiento de su hermana mayor, May, del que ella fue única testigo pero se resiste a compartir la verdad, el cambio de escuela en el intento desesperado de olvidar una vida antes de May, además de que no soporta que la miren con lastima y estén preguntando constantemente por un tema del que ella no está lista para hablar.
Estas cartas van dirigidas a sus artistas favoritos, como Kurt Cobain (que también era el favorito de su hermana) Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison y Heath Ledger, y también a Amelia Earhart, una aviadora a quien ella admiraba mucho y al escribirle le inspira. Es una historia que toca temas fuertes y delicados como el alcohol, las drogas, el abuso sexual, el suicidio, el sufrimiento, la depresión, homofobia, el duelo y lo difícil que es a veces encontrar el sentido de nuestra vida cuando transitamos por ese doloroso camino.
Considero que es un libro que resalta la importancia de la salud mental y de expresar nuestras emociones, pone en relieve las alarmantes consecuencias que puede tener el no contar con el apoyo familiar, social y profesional adecuado cuando tenemos problemas emocionales porque se pueden salir de nuestras manos. También creo que es un libro que puede sensibilizarnos y hacernos voltear a ver al amigo o conocido que de repente se comporta distinto, o que pierde el interés por lo que antes le apasionaba…
Aunque es un libro destinado al público juvenil, es una lectura que más de un adulto disfrutará también. Estos libros son crudos, pero necesarios
