Sinopsis del libro

Todo comienza con un trabajo para la clase de Literatura: escribir una carta a una persona muerta.

Laurel decide escribirle a Kurt Cobain, quien murió joven como May, su hermana. Luego de la primera carta, ya no puede detenerse. Escribirá otras a Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison y Heath Ledger, entre otros personajes famosos. Sin embargo, no le entrega ninguna a su profesora.

La tarea permanece oculta… como tantas cosas de su vida.

Laurel escribe sobre lo que le pasa: cómo se siente empezar en otra escuela, lo difícil que es forjar nuevas amistades, cómo es el primer amor o vivir con padres separados y, lo más importante, escribe sobre la muerte de May. De esta manera, comienza a relacionar las cosas que compartió con su hermana y sus experiencias personales, con las vidas y muertes de estos íconos. Cuando escriba la verdad sobre lo que ocurrió, podrá aceptar la muerte de May y solo así logrará verla y recordarla como la persona que siempre fue: adorable, asombrosa e… imperfecta.

Crecer es doloroso. Muchas veces hay un mundo secreto que tarde o temprano hay que enfrentar. Y se enfrenta mejor con la verdad y con ayuda.

Recuerdo que este libro era uno de los que más deseaba leer mientras estaba en la universidad, pero hasta hace poco pude leerlo y me agarró por sorpresa la intensidad de su contenido.

Es una novela juvenil (sugerida para mayores de 16 años) escrita en forma de misivas por Laurel (casi como un diario), cartas que empezaron como una tarea en la clase de literatura dirigida a una persona muerta y en la que nuestra protagonista encontró el medio perfecto para canalizar sus emociones y pensamientos, siendo así una herramienta para ponerlos en su lugar, desahogarse y comprenderse mejor a sí misma, a quienes le rodean y los últimos difíciles acontecimientos que le han dejado marcada.

Laurel está pasando por una etapa muy difícil: el reciente y misterioso fallecimiento de su hermana mayor, May, del que ella fue única testigo pero se resiste a compartir la verdad, el cambio de escuela en el intento desesperado de olvidar una vida antes de  May, además de que no soporta que la miren con lastima y estén preguntando constantemente por un tema del que ella no está lista para hablar.

Estas cartas van dirigidas a sus artistas favoritos, como Kurt Cobain (que también era el favorito de su hermana) Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison y Heath Ledger, y también a Amelia Earhart, una aviadora a quien ella admiraba mucho y al escribirle le inspira. Estos destinatarios comparten en común ciertas características, como que murieron jóvenes, algunos tuvieron una vida de excesos o andaban con cierta desorientación en la vida, creo que sentía empatía hacia ellos y, de alguna forma, ella pensaba que solamente ellos podrían entenderla (a diferencia de los vivos), sin la presión de expresar más de lo que ella deseara o pudiera encontrando su propio ritmo y, por consiguiente, su propia voz.

Laurel le da sentido a su pérdida a través de lo que escribe, le ayuda a poner en orden sus pensamientos, sus sentimientos y sus recuerdos. Mediante las cartas, Laurel reconoce la verdad ante sí misma, el enojo que siente en su interior pero se niega a aceptar e intenta perdonarse a sí misma. Me gustaron mucho los pensamientos de Laurel, su manera de mantener una especie de relación con personas que ya murieron, y la forma en que rescata las palabras que ellos pronunciaron y que permanecen vivas, lo que enseñaron a los demás con su ejemplo, el llegar incluso a morir por perseguir un sueño y cómo siguen inspirando a muchas personas aún después de haber trascendido.

 Es una historia que toca temas fuertes y delicados como el alcohol, las drogas, el abuso sexual, el suicidio, el sufrimiento, la depresión, homofobia,  el duelo y lo difícil que es  a veces encontrar el sentido de nuestra vida cuando transitamos por ese doloroso camino.

Considero que es un libro que resalta la importancia de la salud mental y de expresar nuestras emociones, pone en relieve las alarmantes consecuencias que puede tener el no contar con el apoyo familiar, social y profesional adecuado cuando tenemos problemas emocionales porque se pueden salir de nuestras manos. También creo que es un libro que puede sensibilizarnos y hacernos voltear a ver al amigo o conocido que de repente se comporta distinto, o que pierde el interés por lo que antes le apasionaba…

Aunque es un libro destinado al público juvenil, es una lectura que más de un adulto disfrutará también. Estos libros son crudos, pero necesarios
