Sinopsis del libro
“Dispara a todos los grajos que quieras, si puedes acertarle, pero recuerda que es pecado matar a un ruiseñor”: Este es el consejo de un abogado a sus hijos mientras él defiende el verdadero ruiseñor de la novela clásica de Harper Lee -un hombre negro acusado de violar a una niña blanca. A través de los ojos de Jem y Scout Finch, Harper Lee explora con humor y honestidad inquebrantable la irracionalidad de la actitud de los adultos hacia la raza y la clase en las profundidades del sur en la década de 1930. La conciencia de una ciudad impregnada de prejuicios, violencia e hipocresía se enfrenta con la resistencia y heroísmo silencioso de la lucha de un hombre por la justicia, pero el peso de la historia no tolera más allá de su límite.

Hoy es el día del padre 😊 y desde que leí este libro sabía que quería escribir sobre él y compartirlo en esta fecha, poque pienso que Atticus Finch es un padre ejemplar, lo veo como una especie de arquetipo de padre ideal, con todo y que no es muy expresivo ni particularmente afectivo.
Pero bien, hablemos del libro. Se publicó en 1960, fue el único libro que escribió su autora y ganó el premio Pulitzer en 1961. Además, es un libro que estuvo prohibido…
Matar un ruiseñor se ambienta en los años 30 en el periodo de la gran Depresión en Estados Unidos, y recorremos la historia a través de Scout, una niña que narra su día a día en la comunidad, lo que vive con su hermano mayor Jem y su amigo Dill que va cada verano con su tía (vecina de los Fich) y le promete amor eterno a Scout cada vez que se va.
Aunque Scout es pequeña, también es muy observadora y tiene una capacidad de crítica muy atinada para su edad y no puede evitar cuestionar y desafiar las injusticias y las cosas absurdas de la vida, como que su maestra la regañe porque ya sabe leer porque “no debería saber”. Esta peculiaridad también es consecuencia de que su padre Atticus Finch, es abogado, padre soltero y cada vez que hay una oportunidad que lo amerita les enseña a sus hijos empatía, el defender a los menos afortunados, justicia, hasta saberse escuchados. Y todo esto desde una forma muy natural, que fluye mientras él está sentado leyendo el periódico o poniéndole mantequilla al pan durante el desayuno, nunca como un sermón forzando que los hijos terminen olvidando.
No sé porqué una de las cosas que más me caían en gracia es que los niños nunca llamaban a Atticus “papá”, sino por su nombre. Lo que levantaba siempre una ola de comentarios despectivos de parte de los vecinos que les escuchaban y que siempre se tomaban la libertad de estar opinando sobre ellos.
Scout es particularmente explosiva, lo que le trae muchos problemas porque le cuesta gestionar sus emociones y su carácter, sobre todo cuando todos en la comunidad y la escuela empiezan a murmurar que Atticus está defendiendo a un negro acusado que violar a una mujer blanca, y como todos sabemos en aquel entonces era la palabra de los blancos sobre la de los negros… Y cuando está en juego el orgullo de Scout, ésta tiene una reacción furibunda.
Este turbulento incidente tambaleó los cimientos de la familia, que además ocurre mientras los niños están entrando a la etapa de la pubertad, así que como te puedes imaginar la situación supone todo un desafío para la familia en la que los niños serán puestos a prueba para madurar y analizar puntos importantes por sí mismos.
Me gusta que los personajes están muy bien estructurados y definidos, y cómo sus respectivas imperfecciones les hacen encajar unos con otros y aprender muchas cosas importantes.
Es una historia cálida, algo plana, y la mayoría del libro transcurre sin tanta intensidad y creo que su encanto radica en eso (característica que pocos libros pueden conseguir con gracia porque la mayoría que lo intenta cae estrepitosamente en el aburrimiento). También quiero resaltar la forma en la que la autora describe el aspecto de Atticus y esa forma que tiene de mirar a Scout con su “ojo bueno” cuando habla de un tema serio. A veces me costaba asimilar que era un personaje ficticio (sé que es un poquis raro, pero cuando lo leas entenderás a qué me refiero y cuando vengas, me platicas si coincides conmigo o no 😊 ).
La película que hicieron basada en el libro me parece una joya y los personajes son exactamente como me los imaginaba e ilustran muy bien la esencia del libro, es de las pocas adaptaciones que, en mi opinión, han estado muy a la altura del libro 😊
Es una novela que toca temas delicados y muy muy polémicos para el año en que se publicó: racismo, injusticia, el papel que se espera de la mujer (incluso desde que es una niña) en la sociedad y en la familia), desafía paradigmas y cuestiona los prejuicios.
Me pasa algo curioso al pensar en los personajes de este libro: los recuerdo con cariño, y con nostalgia como si los hubiese conocido de verdad y me haya despedido de ellos para siempre.
Es una historia que yo siempre recomendaré con los ojos cerrados. Creo que todos debemos aprender algo de Atticus Finch, el personaje ficticio más estoico que he leído y te voy a dejar solo una probadita: “Uno no comprende de veras a una persona hasta que considera las cosas desde su punto de vista… Hasta que se mete en el pellejo del otro y va por ahí como si fuera ese otro”.
